Topic Overview
For my research topic I chose criminal profiling or also known as criminal analysis. Profiling focuses a lot on the psychology side of crime work and police work. Criminology is the study of the causes, control, nature, and the prevention of criminal behavior in a society and individuals. Depending on a persons interest there are different areas that one can focus on types of crimes, consequences, governmental regulations, and the incidence of crimes. Criminal profiling is something that psychologist do to describe character traits of the person responsible from the crimes based off the crime scene and other evidence. Many times profilers are critiqued about whether or not they are bias when it comes to providing a profile. There are two types of generalizations a profiler can do, hasty and sweeping. Hast generalization is when the agent draws conclusions based off a couple of previous specific cases. Sweeping generalization is when the profiler forms a conclusion by assuming that something that has happened in many cases will happen in the current case. Throughout the years, criminal profilers have come up with lists of different traits that are linked to certain offenders. To find my resources for annotations I used the databases that are provided by our school’s library to find scholarly articles and books to be used for citing. Any other sources, such as interviews, magazines, and websites, I just used Google and search different things with the key word of criminal analysis or criminal profiling.
